Born on the S. Miguel, Azores island, Ânia graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, and is currently completing a Master in Painting at the same institution.
Beyond academia, and despite a multi-faceted approach to art and artistic mediums, Ânia Pais often finds her most powerful artistic expression through sculpture, a medium where she continues to evolve an already conceptually and aesthetically advanced language, through an expansive exploration of textiles.
Dissatisfied with bi-dimensional surfaces, Ânia battles with the partial destruction of textiles as a process that allows her to transform an apparently inert material, into fluid organisms that come to ethereally inhabit the spaces where they are installed. The refined plasticity that characterizes Ânia’s work is able to conjure light, strength, movement and happenstance, in a play where the spectator becomes participant as they move in and around her oeuvre.
